The Migration Of Folktales

Did you know that the first Cinderella tale was told over 2000 years ago? This tale was recorded from a Greek historian as a historical event. The tale was about a woman named Rhodopis who was bathing one day when an eagle stole her sandal. The tale tells how the sandal landed in the lap of a king who was fascinated with the size and shape of her sandal and sent messengers throughout the country to find its owner. They found Rhodopis and brought her to the king who eventually became his bride.

Could this have been the story that began our fascination of the beloved fairytale, Cinderella? These are the questions the Huckleberry students have been discussing in library class.

If you have time this holiday season I would encourage you to read some of these ancient folktales from around the world.
