Winnowing Amaranth

This week the Alders stepped back in time and learned the art of winnowing. We harvested and dried the famous ancient grain. We reviewed the important history of amaranth and the health benefits of this super pseudo-cereal. The students worked in small groups to take the seeds off the stalks. These seeds dropped like rain falling into our aluminum pans. Then the fun began!

After making sure the stalks were clean we started winnowing. Many decided it was best to use their own wind to blow the chaff clear of the seed. Others decided to use the box fan and slowly poured their seed in front while watching the chaff blow away in the wind.

Our end product of clean amaranth!

We worked hard to achieve clean seed.
